2020 was a strange year for everyone in the world, not just footballers. But the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that we haven't gotten as much football as we might have done otherwise. That said, there were still plenty of matches played across the year, and some surprise performers and performances along the way. As always, TheMastermindSite.com will now count down the top 100 footballers in the world for the year. This list takes into account a player's form in 2020 as it's primary mechanism, with reputation, club and national team success playing a role as well. Overlapping Centre-Backs – Tactical Analysis

Any team's style of play needs to fit the personnel and formation. But a relatively new, unexplored tactical innovation arising out of the re-emerging rise of back-three formations is the concept of overlapping centre-backs. Teams like Sheffield United and Atalanta have achieved widescale success utilizing attack-minded centre-backs, who frequently find themselves in advantageous positions, attempting to join the attack and create chances for their teammates. By adopting this style of play, these teams create overloads in wide and/or central areas, and push more numbers into the box, where the delivery of crosses can be a great asset. On the surface, this may seem like a very simple approach. But the concept of overlapping centre-backs is far more complex than just the simple nature of a centre-back running around a wing-back. Simone Inzaghi – Lazio – Tactical Analysis

The slightly less famous Inzaghi brother, Simone Inzaghi, is quickly becoming a notorious figure in Serie A, leading Lazio's charge toward the 2019-20 Serie A title. In his four seasons in charge of Lazio, Inzaghi has had an impressive win record of 55%. This season, the former Lazio player has reached unbelievable feats, leading Lazio to second place in the table, a single point behind Juventus. In fact, Inzaghi's team have not lost a Serie A match in 21 games. With the help of the top scorer in Europe's top 5 leagues, Ciro Immobile (27 goals), S.S. Lazio also have the best goal differential in the league (+37), having scored 60 goals and conceded just 23.
