2017 was full of shocking moments and massive upsets in both football and reality TV. From Paul losing Big Brother 19 by a single vote to Italy crashing out of World Cup 2018 Qualifying at the hands of Sweden, upsets were in abundance this year. These are the four biggest upsets of the year as part of The Mastermind Awards.
Italy Fail to Qualify for World Cup 2018
The road to the 2018 World Cup in Russia was a rocky one for many teams. Netherlands, Chile, USA and Algeria were among many top nations left heartbroken after they came up short of qualifying for the distinguished tournament. But of all the teams to fail to qualify, Italy’s collapse was certainly the most devastating. Put in almost any other group, Italy likely would have qualified as the top team in their group. But the Azzurri were put in the same group as Spain, finished as runners-up to the 2010 winners and as a result had to go through a two-leg playoff match against Sweden. Shockingly, Sweden progressed on an aggregate score of 1-0, with the blame falling on Italia’s stellar strikers that just could not find the back of the net. Four players: Giorgio Chiellini, Daniele De Rossi, Andrea Barzagli and most notably Gigi Buffon, all retired following the game and with the ages of all four, you get the feeling that this really would have been their last chance to play in the World Cup. The blame has to be put down to the poor management of Gian Piero Ventura, formerly the manager of Torino and sacked following the team’s collapse, but it was still a massive upset. The four-time winners of the tournament had in form players like Lorenzo Insigne, Marco Verratti and Ciro Immobile all strutting their stuff for fun at club level and all of whom would have certainly starred at the tournament had they qualified. Unfortunately, no Italian player will be featuring at this year’s World Cup and two years ago, that would have been unthinkable.
♥ Paul Abrahamian Loses Big Brother 19
Paul losing Big Brother two seasons in a row by one single vote both times is probably the most devastating thing to happen in the history of the show. But looking back on it and dissecting his game both times, it is clear that Paul didn’t do enough to win the jury over in either season. From any way you look at it, the shock and surprise of Paul losing the game both times, particularly in BB19 when he had controlled every single that happened in the house 92 days straight, will be one of the most talked about Big Brother moments for years to come. Depending on what side you were on, it was either heart-wrenching to watch the agony on his face as he lost by a single vote again, or amazing to watch Josh claim the $500,000 instead. Either way, it was so entertaining to watch and something that so few saw coming. Paul controlled every single thing about Big Brother 19, and that still wasn’t enough to win him the million. It was the greatest upset in Big Brother history and might soon have another honour to its name as the biggest upset of 2017.
Juventus Lose UCL Final
If anyone had a chance at dethroning Real Madrid it was Juventus. The Italian giants were in stunning form leading up to the final with all of their top talents in full flow. Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain were leading the way up front, the entire back-line was unbeatable and Miralem Pjanic was pulling the strings from midfield. But the Italian club just could not make it happen and one of the greatest footballers of all time – Gianluigi Buffon will likely now go without ever winning the UEFA Champions League – a massive upset for the keeper personally and the team as a whole.
Ika and Demetres Crash Out Before Final Two (BBCAN5)
Even despite the decorated cast of Big Brother Canada 5, two names will always stand out above the rest and that is Ika Wong and Demetres Giannitsos. The power duo controlled almost the entire season from back to front, particularly after knocking off Neda Kalantar at the start of the jury-phase. They had everything set up for them going into the triple eviction and only one thing stood in their way from winning the game – Kevin Martin. Unfortunately for them, Kevin went on a Mike Holloway-esque immunity run, winning HOH or the POV in each week that followed Neda’s eviction and stopping them from reaching the final two. Ika crashed out at final four, Demetres at final three, and Kevin Martin led to the demise of both before he swept all nine jury votes.
