Lewis-Skelly and Tzolis star in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Coventry

Earlier this week in my Arsenal preview, I declared the Gunners as favourites for the Premier League title again in 2026-27.

They’re just so complete. So well drilled. So organized. No missing components to the puzzle. It’s a really efficient side that Mikel Arteta has built, and one that can hurt opposing teams from such a vast variety of angles.

To no surprise, they rolled Frank Lampard’s Coventry City over in the opening fixture of the 2026-27 season – claiming an impressive 3-0 win.

All eleven players in an Arsenal shirt stood out. Tactically, two of the players deserve the most post-game commentary.

MYLES LEWIS-SKELLY’S ROLE IN BUILD-UP

Myles Lewis-Skelly played alongside Declan Rice in the role most likely to eventually be designated to Bruno Guimaraes later this season. But good luck to Bruno. Lewis-Skelly barely put a foot wrong all night.

The Arsenal youngster sat deepest in the build-up, acting as the most likely midfielder to drop toward the defense in Arsenal’s back-three build.

Arsenal would utilize Ben White alongside the two centre-backs, but were most effective by pushing him further forward and allowing him to overlap with Bukayo Saka.

So instead, the 19-year-old would drop either to the left of Gabriel or in between the two centre-backs, helping to play passes out from the back, switch the play, and progressively work the ball up the pitch.

The versatile midfielder had the most touches of any Arsenal player, completed all three of his long passes, and made seven passes into the final third.

With Rice also hanging low in builds and allowing both sets of full-backs to push on, the two midfielders became particularly key not only to their build-up, but also to Arsenal’s rest-defense.

Coventry had almost none of the ball, relying on transitional moments to break free. But unfortunately for them, Arsenal were quick to recover in transition, surrounding ball carriers and passes over the defense in numbers.

Lewis-Skelly might not start every match, but he certainly showed his worth in the first. Expect Arsenal’s #49 to see a lot more game time this season.

TZOLIS’ CREATIVITY & FIREPOWER

Arsenal had the most success creating chances in the wide areas. Either Calafiori would combine with Tzolis, or White would overlap around Saka.

Aided by that rest-defense between the two holding midfielders, Calafiori and Tzolis took turns drifting into the half-spaces, as the other hung wide.

On the first goal, Ben White played a switch of play out from the back over to Tzolis. He didn’t fully connect with it, but the pressure of the overload that he and Calafiori created meant that when they won back possession, they already had enough numbers to take control and easily play a pass into Havertz for the finish.

On the second, it was again Tzolis and his trickery that allowed Saka to find a tap-in. The Greek winger is exceptional at finding spaces to receive, and so clever with his dribbling. He prefers to drive and then dip onto his right foot, but can so easily go both ways. That kind of variety makes him a scary level of unpredictable for any defender.

The 24-year-old wing wizard had the most touches in the opposition box (8), created 3 chances, and took the most shots (4) in the match.

Without being properly double-teamed, a player like that can create chance after chance for either himself or others. And that’s what Tzolis did throughout the first half, even before his left boot struck the ball across the goal right over to Saka’s same foot.

With Ben White overlapping to perfection down the other side, Arsenal’s wing combos were far and away the key tactic that won them the game.

This level of domination might not be how Arsenal are able to perform every time. But it’s a great sign for the season ahead, and one that will certainly frighten future teams next to play them. Thanks for reading and see you soon!
