How Bruno Fernandes assists so many goals

Bruno Fernandes made history today, becoming just the third player in Premier League history to reach 20 assists in a single season. The names standing alongside him are two of the other greatest to ever grace the league – Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne.

Bruno’s brilliance has extended to assisting goals from counter-attacks, crosses, sublime through balls, and of course, so many set-pieces.

Some might use his eight set-piece assists as a notch in the favour of Henry or De Bruyne. But it speaks to Fernandes’ brilliance that he can put up so many exceptional deliveries from a dead-ball to help United soar to victory.

Besides, he’s created chances at a historic rate (132 key passes) – more than double any other player in the Prem.

Here is how Bruno Fernandes made history, becoming just the third player to reach 20-assists in the Premier League.

INSANE PASSING RANGE & QUALITY

Anyone who watched United’s final home game today at Nottingham Forest will know that Bruno can pick out a pass better than anyone on the planet right now. His ability to fizz a pass with the perfect amount of weight into the exact right area for a teammate is unmatched. He could have assisted four or five goals against Forest, and it’s a shame for his personal glory that he only got one.

Of his 20 assists this season, eight of them have come from free-kicks or corners, and three have been from through-passes. While the set-piece coaching staff and the heads of Casemiro and Maguire deserve some credit, eight set-piece assists in one season shows just how good Bruno is at whipping a ball toward the back-post with the exact right amount of weight and accuracy.

Only Getafe’s Luis Milla has put up a number that can compare in any regard inside Europe’s top five leagues, with six set-piece assists this campaign. Bruno isn’t just unmatched in the Premier League, he’s unmatched across the toughest leagues in the world.

TIMING

Bruno doesn’t just assist for fun from set-plays, but also from open play. His footballing IQ has entered the highest echelon in his 30’s, with an uncanny ability to time the pass at the perfect, precise moment.

As soon as he sees a dangerous run being made into space, Bruno is never afraid of playing that risky forward pass for his striker to run onto.

When they counter attack, the Portuguese playmaker is the one they rely on to drive the team forward and play the pass at the right moment.

Take this goal against Manchester City. Bruno starts deep inside his own half with a four vs. two situation. He takes control the ball and drives it forward, allowing the others to continue sprinting into space.

He then waits for the exact moment that Mbeumo curls his run away from the City defenders, playing a pass earlier than the defense had been prepared for. It’s quality from Mbeumo to slot it in, but so much more quality from Bruno to time the pass to perfection.

This is where the United captain has excelled all season. He can see the run ready to be made from his teammate, and just before they inch offside, he sprays the pass into space.

It’s often a pass that is so good that the defense can’t react. The goalkeeper can’t come out in time, the defense can’t close down in time. It’s always weighted exactly where the striker is most likely to reach, and not the defense.

This is Bruno’s brilliance, and it’s why he now heads into the final day of the season with the record in his sights.

Bruno Fernandes has been the best player in the Premier League this season, and has fully deserved to equal the assist record. It now remains to be seen on the final matchday as to whether or not he will become the sole player to break the 20-assist barrier. Either way, Bruno deserves his 2025-26 PFA Player of the Season crown.
