The European Player of the Month for the month of September is Borussia Dortmund’s surprise star this season, Gonzalo Castro. The German midfielder has been incredibly good this month, scoring 3 goals with 5 assists to help Borussia Dortmund end with just 1 loss in 6 matches this month.
Borussia Dortmund have been flying high this season and Gonzalo Castro has been at the heart of everything good for the Black and Yellows. He has had some stunning displays this month but his best game ever in a Borussia Dortmund jersey occurred when he took on SC Darmstadt in the Premier League in mid-September and helped Dortmund to a 6-0 win with 2 goals and an assist. Before the Darmstadt game, he also scored and assisted against Legia Warszawa in the Champions League despite playing only 15 minutes. Following the Darmstadt game, he assisted two more goals against VFL Wolfsburg despite only playing forty-five minutes. Finally after all of those wonderful displays he assisted another goal against Freiburg in a 3-1 win and helped BVB hold off Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw in UEFA Champions League action.
The central midfielder wasn’t guaranteed to start by any means this season especially with the influx of new signings who have come through the door, but his stunning performances this month have almost been like a new signing for Dortmund and he’s been their most important player. He is so creative, so ambidextrous in possession of the ball, can pick a pass from anywhere on the pitch and is now adding goals into the mix too, giving Borussia Dortmund absolutely everything they need in midfield. Gonzalo Castro is the European Player of the Month for September 2016!
