On Saturday, Christian Pulisic became the youngest player to score for USA when he scored in the 4-0 friendly win against Bolivia. The seventeen year old was barely even a professional footballer a year ago but has recently made a rise to the top of the German Bundesliga that has seen him score goals for Borussia Dortmund and now get his chance to shine for the American National Team.
In the first half of the 2015-16 season, Christian Pulisic played in 8 matches for Borussia Dortmund’s U-17 side, scoring 6 goals with 5 assists before being promoted to the U-19 side where he scored 4 goals with 4 assists in 7 matches. His fantastic displays for the youth sides got him promoted to the first team for the second half of the 2015-16 season and he didn’t disappoint, becoming the fourth youngest player and all-time youngest non-German player to score in the Bundesliga as he netted the first goal in a 3-0 win against Hamburger SV. He then scored again in a 3-0 win against VFB Stuttgart to become the youngest Bundesliga player to score in two different league matches. In total in 2015-16, Pulisic featured in 3 UEFA Europa League matches and nine Bundesliga matches for Dortmund, scoring 2 goals at just the age of seventeen. Seventeen year old’s around the world are currently dreaming of being just like him.
His displays at the end of the season for Borussia Dortmund earned him a call-up to the USA National Team for a 2018 World Cup Qualifying match against Guatemala in which he became the youngest player to play for the US in a World Cup qualifier, coming on as a substitute in the 81st minute. Since then he’s featured in 2 more matches for his national side, including Saturday’s 4-0 win against Bolivia in which he scored the fourth goal.
As well as his play, what’s impressing his teammates is his attitude and appetite for playing his sport. Michael Bradley, captain of the USA National Team said after the match on Saturday, “In certain moments, you have guys who, in some ways, enjoy all the other stuff just as much, if not more, than just the pure playing,” Bradley said. “With Christian I think, he’s come into the group, he listens, he pays attention, but ultimately when he gets on the field you can see that’s what he loves most” (Goal.com, 2016).
Chrisitan Pulisic’s rise to the top sure has been incredible and being at the age of only seventeen there are much bigger and better things to come from him for both Borussia Dortmund and the USA National Team. Even if he doesn’t have a big impact for USA at this summer’s Copa America, he’ll certainly be one to watch out for in the future as he could turn into an all-time American and Bundesliga great.
