The 2026 World Cup in North America has been electric so far, with each host nation playing with intention, heart, and physicality. Canada might have only found a point against Bosnia, but both Mexico and the U.S. enjoyed one of their best matches in World Cup history. Here are the standout performers from the opening round of fixtures for each host nation.
UNITED STATES
FOLARIN BALOGUN
Embed from Getty ImagesThe obvious pick of the bunch, Folarin Balogun looked clutch and clinical in his first World Cup match. The Monaco forward scored a brace inside the first half for the States, but it was the manner in which he took his goals that impressed so much.
Embed from Getty ImagesHe was cool and composed when sliding in his first, and could not have placed the ball any better on his second. My grandfather would have described the strike as “top shelf where mom keeps the peanut butter”.
Coming alive any time the States had the ball in the final third, Balogun had eleven touches in Paraguay’s box, and made intelligent decisions to pass or shoot every time the States got on their bikes into the attack.

TIM REAM
Embed from Getty ImagesThe States had so many impressive performers in their 4-1 win over Paraguay, but Tim Ream deserves a special shoutout.
Before the tournament, I heard some American soccer fans questioning why Tim Ream wasn’t just taken to the tournament as a coach. Why would he, a 38-year-old centre-back have any chance of playing minutes?
Because Tim Ream still has it all. He is such a great player in all facets of the game. He’s excellent at reading the play on the defensive end and giving himself that extra yard of space to intelligently win passes over the top or 1v1 duels. He’s physical and sound in the air, he’s a leader and organizer; but the best part of Ream’s game is his ability to progress the ball out from the back.
The former Fulham man had 103 touches on the night, completing 93% of his passes, 8/10 of his long passes, and making 18 passes into the final third.
Embed from Getty ImagesHis ball carrying and assuredness in possession helped to ensure Paraguay couldn’t get a grip on the game, and he hardly put a foot wrong all night in defense.
All four of America’s defenders were strong on the night. In fact, all of their starters had strong showings. But something about seeing Tim Ream still so solid in 2026 for the States stood out.
CANADA
ISMAËL KONÉ
Embed from Getty ImagesEvery time Ismaël Koné had the ball at his feet against Bosnia, he made something happen. Koné had several sublime passes into the final third that broke lines and got Canada into scoring positions, and dominated the midfield with his physicality.
Defensively, Canada were a bit exposed in midfield, particularly in transition down their wide left. Pulling players out of position to cover, Koné sometimes found himself over-run and swarmed by the Bosnian strikers dropping deep and the midfield advancing ahead. It was a lot for him to cope with, and he didn’t always win those battles.

LIAM MILLAR
Embed from Getty ImagesEvery time Liam Millar picked up the ball against Bosnia, he looked not only dangerous, but frightening. Millar has emerged from Alphonso Davies’ shadow as of late for Canada, and suddenly become the man they want with the ball at their feet every attack.
Unfortunately, Millar still has work to do in getting the most out of his end product. None of his four crosses found a teammate, and he couldn’t find connectivity with his front-line.
But for his energy and intensity in all areas of the match, Millar stood out once more. On paper, he might look like one of the few who could be replaced inside the eleven, but Liam Millar is starting to become one of Marsch’s key men, and one of Canada’s best players every time he plays.
MEXICO
JULIAN QUINONES
Embed from Getty ImagesIf you’re a fan of the big European leagues, you might not know Julian Quinones. Allow me to introduce you to a player who scored 33 goals in 31 matches last season in the Saudi Pro League. The next top scorer bagged 16, not even half of what the Mexican forward managed.
This is a player that knows how to impact a football match. He knows how to strike a football with pace and power to find the back of the net. He’s someone that perfectly embodies the energy and intensity in which Mexico employ. And he did all of that against South Africa.
Embed from Getty ImagesHe scored the opener with oomph behind the strike. He helped lead Mexico’s press from the front of their attack. He terrorized South Africa’s right-sided defense, winning five dribbles (5/6) and seven ground duels (7/9). Quinones gave everything that Mexico could have asked for from him, and already looks like one of the best players at this tournament.
ÉRIK LIRA
Embed from Getty ImagesI analyzed Cruz Azul for Forge FC’s CONCACAF Champions League matchup all the way back in 2022. Even back then when he was 22, Érik Lira was one of the standout players in the team. He was the key progressor as the deepest holding midfielder for his club, and an absolute defensive destructor.
Such a physical presence and so exceptional at covering ground across the pitch, Lira catapulted himself into the Mexican National Team that season and hasn’t looked back. He’s now at a level to easily usurp the former Premier League player Edson Álvarez, firmly holding that ‘6’ position down as his own.
What I like most about Lira is that he plays like a terrier. He wants to get in your face. He wants to put pressure on the opposition. He wants to make crunching tackles and stop opposition attacks. Lira did all of that on Thursday, ensuring that South Africa could never get a grip of the game.
Embed from Getty ImagesIt was his intensity from the press and his tackle that led to Mexico’s opening goal of the tournament – the perfect emblem of his entire performance.
A sound figurehead in possession, Lira completed 93% of his passes, including 4/5 long ball passes in the game. On the other end, the Mexican midfielder won all of his duels and helped Mexico stay assured in central defensive areas.
It was the kind of performance that could so easily entice one of Europe’s elite clubs. I for one, would love to see his physicality flourish in the Premier League.

How Bruno Fernandes assists so many goals
