The evolution of the goalkeeper

oalkeepers need to have strong psychological skills, and always back themselves to perform. Even when they are full of confidence and everything they touch stays out of the net, that can all change so quickly. If a goalkeeper slips up, it usually results in a goal, and that inherently makes their position so much more difficult than any other.

Euro 2020 – England – Tactical Preview

England have not won a major international tournament since 1966. With the likes of Harry Kane, Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and Declan Rice in full flow for the Three Lions at this summer's tournament, hopes are high that this could be the year England claim another tournament triumph to add to their trophy cabinet. Our friends over at The Tactics Show break down England's tactics, and how they might be able to prove everyone right by winning this summer's European Championships.

Why England’s tactical flexibility makes them favourites for Euro 2020

The England National Team heads into the UEFA European Football Championship in scintillating form, with a crop of players that some argue could rival the golden generation at the 2004 edition of the tournament. However, this time, hopes are even greater for The Three Lions, as Gareth Southgate's squad not only has a wealth of depth, but also tactical flexibility. With the hope and promise that Southgate's squad could pick up silverware for the first time since 1966, we take a look at how they might approach the competition, tactically and beyond.

Euro 2020 – Portugal – Tactical Preview

In 2016, Portugal stunned the world, winning the European Championships against all the odds. This time they enter the 2021 tournament with an even stronger squad - led by the likes of Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, Joao Cancelo, Raphael Guerreiro and of course...Cristiano Ronaldo. So with that The Tactics Show now takes a look at Portugal's chances of winning this summer's Euro 2020 tournament.

How Greece shocked the world at Euro 2004

It is very rare that a major international tournament provides a real shock in the final. Usually, the best teams do progress to the final and the shocks are reserved for the early rounds. World Soccer ranks the United States beating England 1-0 at the 1950 World Cup as the first truly big shock, but the final between Uruguay and Brazil was expected. South Korea beating Italy 2-1 in the 2002 World Cup Round of 16 was a massive shock, but nobody was surprised to see Germany and Brazil in the final. No, shocks are very rarely maintained throughout the tournament, but in 2004, Greece did just that.

Arsenal – the ‘Mentality Kittens’ bound for more failure

Last season’s FA Cup triumph over Chelsea was supposed to herald the start of something special for Arsenal Football Club and Mikel Arteta. Instead, it's the Blues who have taken a huge step forward under the influence of Thomas Tuchel, with a return to the FA Cup final one year on and a UEFA Champions League final in their wake. Arsenal meanwhile have spectacularly regressed toward mediocrity, hovering in and around the likes of Leeds, Everton and Aston Villa.
