Most fans of the Premier League and Liverpool will agree that the greatest front trio to ever exist for the Reds came under Jurgen Klopp’s reign over the club, with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah linking up in perfect harmony.

After Roberto Firmino left the club, in came a surprise new talisman. A nifty, neat and tidy little left winger, who many thought would be a great back-up to Sadio Mane as the Senegalese’s time at the club came to an end.

But instead, Jota slotted into that false nine role, fitting the vibe of the role perfectly, and understanding his part to play in making all the magic happen around him. Jota was an instant hit for the Reds, not only as the playmaker that could support Salah and Mane, but as an undeniable goal scorer. The Portuguese striker netted 34 goals in 85 appearances across all competitions in his first two seasons, developing a knack for finishing off chances in the penalty area.

What became perhaps most impressive about Jota’s early years at Liverpool was his surprise knack for scoring headed goals.

At just 5’10, Jota still made his presence felt against the tallest of defenders, often ghosting in late to the penalty area to nod in some sublime finishes. His timing of runs into scoring positions was always superb, making him a dangerous weapon for the magnificent crossing of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

A skillful dribbler and capable presser, Jota embodied the Liverpool way through and through, making himself a useful option for the Reds even after the likes of Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz entered the frame.

He would have undoubtedly been a part of Liverpool’s plans to repeat upon last year’s title, and it’s a real shame that he won’t get to see that come to reality.

Diogo Jota will be remembered as an underrated goal scorer, a versatile forward for club and country, and someone gone far too soon. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre.
