In covering dozens of different events, seasons, tournaments and shows there is always a handful of losers to talk about and one very distinct winner to eulogize. These are the six best Winners of 2016 as part of the 2016 Mastermind Awards.
Leicester City (2015-16 Barclays Premier League) ♥
There has never been a greater achievement in the history of football. Claudio Ranieri managed to take a team of mid-table type players and lead them all the way to Premier League glory in 2015-16 in arguably the greatest moment the Premier League has ever seen. Leicester lost just three games the entire season on their way to winning the Premier League title and won every single award imaginable from Players’ Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez to FWA Player of the Year Jamie Vardy to Manager of the Year Claudio Ranieri. This was a truly special set of players and manager and a piece of history like this might never be repeated. Dilly ding, dilly dong, vote for Leicester City to win this award.
Riyad Mahrez (PFA Player of the Year)
Hardly anyone had even heard of Riyad Mahrez before the 2015-16 season as the player netted just 4 goals this season before! But when Claudio Ranieri came to the club the Algerian midfielder transformed into a whole new player. The right winger stunned the league with his insane dribbling skills, incisive finishes and wonderful ability to pick a pass as he scored 17 goals with 11 assists in 37 league matches to win the PFA Player of the Year award and help Leicester City win the title against all odds. Talk about Leicester having 5000/1 odds to win the league before the season began, Riyad Mahrez would have had similar odds to win this award but somehow managed to pull it off.
Portugal (Euro 2016)
Nobody expected Portugal to win Euro 2016 but Cristiano and co managed to pull it off. With Nani, Ronaldo, Joao Mario, Guerreiro, Rui Patricio, Pepe and William Carvalho all firing on all cylinders, Portugal managed to win the tournament despite only winning two games (excluding PK shootout wins) before the final. With the manager’s fantastic squad rotation policy, Portugal had the legs to kick on when other teams just simply couldn’t, winning several knockout stage games in extra time. Despite not having many big name players, A Selecao managed to defy the odds and come out as victors of the summer tournament with every single player playing a part.
